Chapter 2: Part 4
Developmental Edit
What is Developmental Editing?
If you’re struggling with plot and character consistency, POV, general flow and pacing, or direction in your manuscript, I would love to help you out. Whether you’re a first-time author or a seasoned world-builder, I can assist you in focusing your voice and ideas in the plot, allowing you to create that book you’ve always wanted to. Do you have trouble keeping track of who’s said or done what? Is maintaining story continuity a difficulty for you? That’s what I’m here for. Make sure your plot flows both in the way that you want and also in a way that conveys your intent to your readers. Clarity is king.
Developmental Editing
My rate for Developmental Editing is $13.50 per thousand words for first-time clients and $12.50 for repeat clients.
“What you’ve done is exactly what I look for in a developmental edit. You let me know what you’re thinking as you’re reading, even if you’re not suggesting a change (valuable to see the reader’s thought process as they go through) and you point out the stuff that I need pointed out, such as inconsistencies left over from rewritten scenes or timeline issues from when I rearranged scenes around but didn’t catch all the changes that needed to be made. I’m still working my way through it, but so far this is invaluable feedback.”
-Rockwell Scott
“I sent my first book to be edited by Josiah. As it is my first novel, I was naturally nervous of the whole process, but Josiah was able to lead me through the editing and show me which items I need to address. He gave a very thorough reading of the story and gave advice on character development and story arc. When needed, he gave relevant praise which boosted my confidence in the writing process. I found it a great learning experience. On top of that, Josiah taught me some relevant writing skills, so this was highly educational.”
-Gabriel Ruse
“Josiah was great to work with. The comments he made throughout his developmental edit were insightful and straightforward. The plot and characters in my book are much clearer and more fleshed out as a result of his work. In addition, he made a few notes about bad writing habits I didn’t even realize I had, and for that I’m grateful. If you’re considering working with Josiah, do it.”
-Emily Kazmierski
“As a debut author, I am grateful to have had my first editing experience with Josiah. He went through my manuscript with a fine-toothed comb and helped me smooth out the broader points with the characters and plot, along with a thorough tightening of the writing itself. He was also available to work with me between the editing stages as I applied his feedback to my book, and he was also able to give me his opinion on ideas I had for changes to the story. It was wonderful to work with someone with a genuine desire to help me make my story the best it could be.”
-Sophia Minetos
“Josiah has been a huge help in refining my story, providing valuable insight and feedback. He asks the questions you need to consider, exposing plot holes and inconsistencies. When the dev work is done, Josiah also provides a very good framework and suggestions for smoothing out dialogue, and making the work flow better overall.”
-Casualfarmer
“I have used Josiah’s Author’s Assistant editing package and have been very impressed. He brings a fresh eye to my plot and helps me to both fill in holes and clean up things that made sense in my head but didn’t come across to the reader.”
